A long, long time ago, two children lived with their mother in the mountain village of Taiwan.
One day, the mother had some work to do with her relatives that lived far away on the other side of the mountain.
“I won’t be back until tomorrow. Can you two spend the night without me?”
“I’m scared without you, mom,” said the younger brother. “We’ll be okay, mother, because I’ll be here,” added the older sister.
“Don’t open the door for anyone. Fearful Tora-Baba might come, you know. I’ll hurry home tomorrow,” said the mother as she left.
The two children felt very worried after their mother left and decided to go to bed early.
Some time had passed when they heard a knock at the door.
“Sis, someone’s at the door.” “You’re just imagining things. Go to sleep.”
Bang, bang. “Someone’s here.” “I wonder who it is…”
An old woman’s voice said, “I’m your aunt, your father’s older sister, open the door.”
“Our mother told us not to open the door for anyone, so I will not open the door to let you in,” responded the sister.
“Sis, she says she’s Dad’s sister,” said the younger brother with a worried face.
“Your mother asked me to take care of you two, so open up,” the voice persisted.
The older sister opened the door thinking it will be okay if that was what their mother had said. And as soon as she opened the door, an old woman with totally grey hair pushed herself into the house. “Now that I’m here, there’s nothing to worry about. I will sleep with the both of you,” said the old woman. The younger brother was so happy and went to bed with her.
In the middle of the night, the older sister woke up to a sound of someone eating something. ‘Crunch, crunch, munch, munch.’ As she looked inside the room where her brother and the old woman was sleeping, she saw the old woman eating something.
“What are you eating? I’m hungry too, so give me some.”
“Here,” said the woman as she threw something to the sister.
As the sister picked it up and looked closely, she saw that it was her brother’s finger.
‘It’s Tora-Baba. What shall I do? It’s the tiger monster that mother told us about. My brother was eaten up and I’ll be next,’ thought the sister.
The sister was a smart girl and tried to keep her composure as she said calmly, “I need to go to the toilet.”
She then went outside and climbed a big tall tree next to the outhouse toilet.
The old woman waited for the sister to come back, but after a while she went outside to look for her. She looked inside the toilet, but it was empty.
“Where did you go? Come out wherever you are,” the old woman in a growling voice called out as she circled around the toilet. And when she looked inside the hand-washing water bowl, she saw the reflection that was lit up by the moonlight. She looked up and found the sister hiding in the large tree.
“Come down and I’ll eat you up in one gulp,” the old woman roared.
“Alright, I give up. You can eat me but before you do, please do me a last favor and let me have my favorite bean oil before I die,” the sister pleaded. “I like to have my bean oil very hot. After I have a sip, I’ll come down so please heat up the oil in the kitchen and bring me the pot.”
As told, Tora-Baba went into the kitchen to heat up the oil. She brought the pot underneath the tree and tied it to the rope the sister had hung from the tree branch. “Hurry and drink up the oil and come down from the tree!” yelled Tora-Baba.
The sister quickly pulled us the pot and pretended to drink the oil as she watched carefully at Tora-Baba.
“What are you doing? Hurry and come down from there!”
As Tora-Baba looked up with her mouth wide open, the sister dumped the hot oil down her throat. With the hot boiling oil down her throat, Tora-Baba screamed and tumbled about in pain before dropping down to the ground.
The next morning, the mother came home.
“Oh, Mother~,” the sister jumped into her mother’s arms and cried.
This story spread all over Taiwan and since then, the people began to hunt and kill all the tigers until none of them were left in the country.
