A long time ago, there lived a very large tiger deep in the mountain.
The tiger was not only big, but moved very fast and could catch any animal he wanted in the mountain whenever he was hungry,so he was feared by all animals that lived in the mountain.
During one cold winter, because of continuous days of snow, the tiger hadn’t eaten for several days.
‘Oh, I’m going to die of hunger…’ thought the tiger since he hadn't eaten anything so he decided to go down the mountain to look for food.
By dusk, the tiger reached a village at the foot of the mountain.
While looking for food, the tiger found a small cattle stable belonging to a farmer.Inside the stable, a cow was sleeping soundly.‘Thank goodness, I found my meal.’
He was just about to pounce on his prey when a loud cry of a baby came from inside the house.
Taken by surprise, the tiger thought to himself, ‘what’s that noise?’
He then quietly approached the house where he saw a mother soothing a baby.
“It’s alright my little baby. If you cry so much the wolf will come. Don’t cry…”
But the baby continued to cry.
“Stop crying. The tiger is just outside the door! How scary, how scary,” the mother told her baby, not knowing that the real tiger was actually just outside her door.
‘How did that mother know I was here?’ thought the tiger. Meanwhile the baby’s cry became even louder. ‘Oh? That baby doesn’t seem to be scared of me.’
Since the baby didn’t stop crying, the mother went to get something out of the kitchen cabinet.
“Here my son. I have a Kokkam (dried persimmon) for you.”
Then, to the tiger’s surprise, the baby stopped crying.
‘Kokkam? Kokkam? What can be so ferocious to make the baby stop crying? It must be much stronger and meaner than me. If I stay here, it may catch me and eat me up.’
The tiger backed up quietly and entered the cow stable. By this time, it was very dark inside.
Just then, the tiger noticed something entering the stable. ‘What is that?’ ‘Is it that Kokkam?’
The tiger was so scared that he couldn’t move.
He then felt something coming closer to him. The next minute, he felt something stroking his back. “This one’s good. It’s nice and fat.”
By this time, the tiger was shivering with fear.
What the tiger thought was a Kokkam was actually a thief that came into the stable to steal a cow. The stable was pitch black so the thief couldn’t see a thing.
And thinking that the tiger was a cow, the thief jumped on its back and the tiger was startled.
‘Oh no! I got caught by the Kokkam. I’ll be eaten up!’ The tiger jumped up and down and around and around.
The thief held on tightly so that he wouldn't be shaken off. ‘I guess this is the end of me,’ the tiger thought while trying desperately to throw off whatever that was on his back. The thief also tried desperately to hang on and held tightly to the tiger’s neck which made the tiger choke. With all the power he had left, he managed to run out of the stable.
‘If I run fast enough, even the mighty Kokkam will be thrown off.’ ‘Wow, this cow can really move! But I can’t let him get away,’ thought the thief while holding on tightly with all his strength. The tiger with the thief on his back ran through the village and through the mountains.
After a while, the sky began to get lighter.
In the dim light, the thief realized that he was not riding on a cow’s back but on a tiger.
‘Oh my gosh, it’s not a cow! Is it a tiger? Yes, it’s a tiger!’
The thief was so shocked that his heart was about to pop out.
Just when the thief was about to get thrown off, he saw a branch of a tree in front of him. He quickly reached out and grabbed hold of the branch.
The tiger kept running and didn’t even notice that his back was now unloaded and ran straight back to his cave.
Once he felt safe at home, the tiger flopped to the floor and let out a big sigh saying,
“hew, it sure was crazy. I almost got eaten up by a Kokkam…”
