Long, long ago, there was a family with two brothers. The Parents eventually passed away and left the two brothers living together. The elder brother was a mean, greedy and lazy man, totally different from the gentle, clever younger brother. When the two became adults, they both got married and decided to live separately. The greedy brother took all the properties: the house, rice paddies, and fertile land. The only thing he left to his poor younger brother`s family was just a small barren land with a star fruit tree.
Without any complaints, the younger brother and his wife built a small hut on the tiny piece of land and took care of the star fruit tree.
Luckily that year, the tree bore a lot of fruits. The younger brother and his wife were so happy. They planned to sell those fruits to purchase rice.
One day, a phoenix suddenly came and ate all the star fruits.
The younger brother was so sad that he gave a big sigh and told the phoenix, “oh, phoenix, my wife and I just have this one tree to rely on for living, but now that you have eaten up most of the fruits on the tree, how can we make a living from now on?”
Surprisingly, the phoenix said, “I will pay you for the fruits with gold. Prepare a three-span (about 9 inches in size) bag and we will go fetch some gold.”
The younger brother was puzzled, but eventually, he decided to do what the phoenix told him and asked his wife to help him make a three-span bag.
The following day, the phoenix came again. After finishing its meal of delicious star fruits, it told the younger brother to mount on its back. It then carried him over high mountains, crossed wide sea before landing on an island in the middle of the ocean, which was full of gold, silver and gemstones. The younger brother took just enough gold to fill his three-span bag and went back home to his wife with the phoenix.
From that time, the younger brother and his wife became rich. They did not keep their wealth for only themselves but shared it with other poor families in the area. They were love by all the neighbors because of their warmhearted goodwill.
Hearing this news, the older brother visited his younger brother and asked him how he became so rich. The honest younger brother told him the story of the star fruit tree and the phoenix.
Listening to the magical story, the greedy older brother told his younger brother that he would give him all his properties in exchange for the small piece of land with star fruit tree and the hut on it. Never acting against his older brother’s wishes, the younger brother agreed.
The older brother and his wife moved into the small hut and began to live on the piece of land with the star fruit tree. They did not do anything but wait for the phoenix to come and take them to the treasure island.
One day, the phoenix came to eat the star fruits again.
As soon as it landed on the branch, the older brother started pleading, “oh, phoenix, my wife and I just have this one tree to rely on for living, but since you have eaten up all the fruits on the tree, how can we make a living from now on?”
Same as the last time, the phoenix said, “I will pay you for the fruits with gold. Prepare a three-span bag and we will go fetch some gold.”
The older brother happily told his wife make a bag for him immediately. Wanting to get more treasure, the two made a nine-span bag instead of three-span.
The following morning, as soon as the phoenix arrived, the older brother hurriedly mounted on it and ordered it to take him to the treasure island. As told, the phoenix flew over the high mountains, soared across the wide sea and landed on the treasure island in the middle of the ocean.
Seeing all those treasures, the older brother quickly grabbed a lot of gold and gemstones to stuff, not only his nine-span bag, but all the pockets of his clothes that he could put gold into.
The long journey home and heavy weight of gold soon made the phoenix very tired. It asked the older brother to throw some of those gold nuggets away, but obviously, the greedy older brother did not want to give up even one nugget.
When the phoenix was flying over the sea, a strong wind blew and as it could no longer bear the weight on its back anymore, it turned its body sideways; and the mean, greedy, lazy older brother fell into the sea along with the gold and gemstones.
