" The Race Between the Deer and the Hermit Crab "

シカとヤドカリの競（きょう）争（そう）

a story similar to the “The Tortoise and the Hare”
(folktales in Marc region)

（マルク地（ち）方（ほう）の民（みん）話（わ））

　This story took place a long time ago when the islands of this region were much greener than now.
　It seems that a race between a deer and a hermit crab was held on the seaside of the province. The sandy beach spreads along the coastline with grasslands and rocky area leading to the inland where various plants and animals grow and live. In the distance, you can see a row of capes lining the coastline.
　As you walk from the beach towards the land, you will find a very beautiful forest. With large trees covered with layers of leaves, this forest is a home to various animals and plant life.

　In this beautiful forest, we see a deer with branched horn walking around searching for food.
　While enjoying the sight of beautiful trees and birds singing, the deer finds himself walking towards the beach where he came across a hermit crab.
　The hermit crabs can be seen on the beach when the tide is low. They carry a conch on their back that looks like a spiral shell. Even when the body of the crab gets larger, the size of the conch remains the same, so this is the reason they renew the conch from time to time to protect their soft and tender body from their enemies.

　“Hey, why are you carrying such a big stone-like thing on your back?”
　The hermit crab was startled at the deer’s sudden mockery, and while ignoring the question, he built enough courage to ask, “Why did you come here from the forest?”
　“You don’t think this beach belongs to you, do you?” said the deer with a look of disdain.
　“Of course, it’s mine,” the hermit crab answered confidently.
　This is how the argument between the deer and the hermit crab began. And as the argument seemed endless, the deer made a proposal.
　“There’s no point in arguing anymore. Let’s decide who’s right by a race. We will start here and see who can reach the 11th cape first. If I win, this beach will be mine.In that case, you’ll have to move out from here. If I lose, I will go back to the forest.”
　“Okay, that’s fine. Let’s have the race the day after tomorrow.”
　“Agreed,” said the deer and started hopping back to the forest.

　The hermit crab then gathered his friends and explained about the race against the deer. He asked each of his friends to be located at each of the 11 capes before the race begins.
　“When the race starts, the deer will surely take the lead and he will look back and make fun at me for moving so slowly. And when he asks, ‘Where are you?’ just before reaching each of the capes, you will respond, ‘Here I am.’ In this way, the deer will be exhausted when he reaches the 11th cape and then, we can win for sure! Got it?” “Got it!”
　Two days later, the deer came to the beach as promised.
　“Are you ready?” the deer asked.
　“Of course,” said the hermit crab. At that time, the 11 hermit crabs were already hidden behind each of the 11 capes.

　“Let’s begin!”
　As expected, the deer took the lead and when he came near the first cape, he looked back at the hermit crab following way behind him and yelled, “Run faster! I’m a way head of you!”
　But when he reached the first cape, a response came from the hermit crab standing-by at the first cape, “What are you saying? I’m already here.”
　Surprised to find out that he was the one falling behind, the deer started to run at a faster speed.

　And the race continued in this fashion until just before the 11th cape when the deer ran out of energy and crumbled down to the ground.
　This is how the hermit crab won the race, and as before, enjoyed his life on the beach while the deer remained in the forest.

　この　話（はなし）は、この　地（ち）方（ほう）の　島（しま）々（じま）が、今（いま）より　ずっと　緑（みどり）に　おおわれて　いた、 昔（むかし）々（むかし）の　ことです。
　この　地（ち）方（ほう）の　海（うみ）辺（べ）で　シカと　ヤドカリの　競（きょう）争（そう）が　 行（おこな）われたそうです。海（うみ）辺（べ）には　砂（すな）浜（はま）が　広（ひろ）がり、近（ちか）くには　草（くさ）地（ち）や　岩（いわ）場（ば）が　あり、遠（とお）くには　岬（みさき）が　見（み）えます。砂（すな）浜（はま）や　近（ちか）くの　草（くさ）地（ち）、岩（いわ）場（ば）には、いろいろな　植（しょく）物（ぶつ）が　生（は）え、動（どう）物（ぶつ）が　住（す）んで　います。
　海（うみ）辺（べ）から　陸（りく）の　方（ほう）へ　向（む）かって　進（すす）んで　いくと、とても　美（うつく）しい　森（もり）が　あります。大木（たいぼく）が　こんもりと　葉（は）を　しげらせて　います。森（もり）は　いろいろな　動（どう）物（ぶつ）や　植（しょく）物（ぶつ）の　命（いのち）を　育（はぐく）んで　います。

　この　美（うつく）しい　森（もり）に、一（いっ）頭（とう）の　シカが　住（す）んで　いました。枝（えだ）分（わ）かれした　角（つの）を　持（も）つ　この　シカは、食（た）べ物（もの）を　探（さが）しながら、歩（ある）いて　いました。
　木（き）々（ぎ）の　美（うつく）しい　緑（みどり）と、鳥（とり）の　さえずりに、心（こころ）　ひかれて　歩（ある）いて　いる　うちに、いつの間（ま）にか、シカは　森（もり）から　海（うみ）辺（べ）へと　出（で）て　きました。そして、ヤドカリに　出（で）会（あ）ったのです。　
　ヤドカリは　引（ひ）き潮（しお）の　時（とき）に、浜（はま）辺（べ）で　見（み）る　ことが　できます。背（せ）中（なか）に　巻（まき）貝（がい）の　形（かたち）を　した　殻（から）を　かついで　います。体（からだ）が　大（おお）きく　なっても、殻（から）は　大（おお）きく　なりません。それで、体（からだ）が　大（おお）きく　なるに 　したがって、次（つぎ）から　次（つぎ）へと　殻（から）を　変（か）えるのです。やわらかい　体（からだ）を　この　殻（から）に　かくして、身（み）を　守（まも）る　ためです。

「おい、どうして　そんな　大（おお）きな　石（いし）みたいな　ものを　かついで　歩（ある）いて　いるんだよ」
　突（とつ）然（ぜん）、シカの　あざけるような　声（こえ）が　聞（き）こえたので、ヤドカリは　おどろきました。でも、負（ま）けずに　 言（い）い返（かえ）しました。
「森（もり）に　住（す）む　君（きみ）が　どうして　ここに　いるのさ」
「ヤドカリ君（くん）、まさか、この　浜（はま）が　自（じ）分（ぶん）の　ものだと　思（おも）って　いるんじゃない　だろうね」
「もちろん、ぼくの　ものさ」
　ヤドカリは　当（とう）然（ぜん）のように、答（こた）えました。
　こうして、シカと　ヤドカリの　口（こう）論（ろん）が　始（はじ）まりました。口（こう）論（ろん）は　なかなか　終（お）わりそうも　ありません。そこで、シカが　ある　提（てい）案（あん）を　しました。
「言（い）い合（あ）いを　続（つづ）けても　仕（し）方（かた）　ないよ。競（きょう）争（そう）で　勝（か）ち負（ま）けを　決（き）めよう。ここを　スタートして、第（だい）十（じゅう）一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）まで、どちらが　早（はや）く　着（つ）くか、競（きょう）争（そう）しよう。もし、ぼくが　勝（か）ったら、この　浜（はま）は　ぼくの　ものさ。その　時（とき）は、君（きみ）は　ここを　出（で）て　いくんだぞ。もしも、ぼくが　負（ま）けたら、森（もり）に　もどる　ことに　するよ」
「いいだろう。じゃあ、競（きょう）争（そう）は　あさってに　しよう」
「わかった」　

　シカは　ピョンピョン、とびはねながら、森（もり）へ　帰（かえ）って　いきました。浜（はま）の　ヤドカリは　仲（なか）間（ま）たちを　集（あつ）めて、シカとの　競（きょう）争（そう）に　ついて　説（せつ）明（めい）しました。そして、競（きょう）争（そう）が　始（はじ）まる　前（まえ）に、仲（なか）間（ま）の　十一（じゅういっ）匹（ぴき）の　ヤドカリを　十（じゅう）一（いち）の　岬（みさき）に　一（いっ）匹（ぴき）ずつ　配（はい）置（ち）する　ことに　しました。
「競（きょう）争（そう）が　始（はじ）まれば、敵（てき）が　リードする　はずだ。前（まえ）を　走（はし）る　シカは、後（うし）ろを　振（ふ）り返（かえ）って、速（はや）く　走（はし）れない　ぼくを、バカに　するに　ちがいないよ。その　時（とき）、『今（いま）　どこに　いる？』と　シカに　きかれたら、それぞれ　順（じゅん）に　『ここだよ』と　答（こた）えるんだ。そうすれば、十（じゅう）一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）に　着（つ）く　頃（ころ）には、シカは　すっかり　つかれはて、力（ちから）が　つきて　しまうから。こうすれば、必（かなら）ず　勝（か）てるよ。準（じゅん）備（び）は　いいね」
「いいよ」
　二（　ふつ）日（か）後（ご）、シカは　時（じ）間（かん）　どおりに、ヤドカリの　待（ま）つ　浜（はま）へ　来（き）ました。
「準（じゅん）備（び）は　いいか」
　シカが　たずねると、
「もちろん」
ヤドカリは　答（こた）えました。その　時（とき）は　すでに、ヤドカリたちは　それぞれの　岬（みさき）に　一（いっ）匹（ぴき）ずつ　かくれて　いました。

「さあ、始（はじ）めよう」　
シカは　リードし、前（まえ）を　走（はし）って　います。一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）に　近（ちか）づいた　時（とき）、シカは　ずっと　後（うし）ろを　ふり返（かえ）って　言（い）いました。
「さあ、もっと　速（はや）く　走（はし）れよ！こっちの　ほうが　速（はや）いぞ」　
　ところが、第（だい）一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）に　着（つ）いた　時（とき）、シカが　後（うし）ろに　いる　はずの　ヤドカリに　声（こえ）を　かけた　ところ、岬（みさき）に　かくれて　いた　ヤドカリが　答（こた）えました。
「なに　言（い）って　るんだ。もう、ここに　いるよ」
　自（じ）分（ぶん）が　おくれて　いる　ことを　知（し）った　シカは、さらに　スピードを　速（はや）めて　走（はし）りました。このように　して、第（だい）十（じゅう）一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）まで　競（きょう）争（そう）が　行（おこな）われました。

　全（ぜん）速（そく）力（りょく）で　走（はし）り続（つづ）けた　シカは、第（だい）十（じゅう）一（いち）番（ばん）目（め）の　岬（みさき）に　着（つ）く　頃（ころ）には、とうとう　力（ちから）が　つきて、バタンと　倒（たお）れて　しまいました。
　この　ように　して、ヤドカリは　競（きょう）争（そう）に　勝（か）つ　ことが　できました。そして、以（い）前（ぜん）と　変（か）わる　こと　なく、ヤドカリは　浜（はま）に、シカは　森（もり）に　住（す）む　ことに　なった、と　いう　ことです。
