Preface
How do roosters crow? Cock-ko? Cock-a-doodle-doo? Co-ke-cock-ko? Or…?
Do you know why they crow like that? I am telling you why…
Long long ago. When the ground was just formed but it was wet and muddy, there was a god who had many birds.
One day, the god asked himself.
“There are so many birds here. Will there be enough food for them?”
Then, the god called his pheasant and told:
“Hey, my pheasant. Look, there is newly formed land over there. I want you to go there to see if the land is in a good condition, and if grass is growing. Let me know as soon as possible.”
“Ke-n! Ke-n! Yes, sir. I am going now.”
The pheasant left right away.
When the pheasant arrived in the land, he saw the land was nice and dry. It was filled with lush green grass, and there was plenty of food too!
“Wow, what a treat!”
He completely forgot the god's favor. Soon, he was busy with eating.
“Humm Humm... Munch Munch... Yumm Yumm… Humm Humm...Munch Munch... Humm Humm... Munch Munch... Oh… I am full... Yawn, I am getting sleepy...”
Then, he fell asleep.
Meanwhile, the god was waiting for his pheasant to return. However, no matter how long, he did not come back.
The god was wondering. This time he decided to tell his rooster instead:
“Hey, my rooster. Look, there is newly formed land over there. I want you to go there to see if the land is in a good condition and if grass is growing. Let me know as soon as possible.”
“Cock-Cock-Cock-Cock-Cock-ko! Yes, sir. I am going now.”
The rooster left right away.
When the rooster arrived in the land, he saw the land was nice and dry. And it was filled with lush green grass.
One leg at a time, he started inserting his legs into the soil to check if it was in a good condition.
“Humm Humm... the soil here is perfect... Humm Humm…the soil here is also perfect…”
And then…
“Co-Co-Kekko-!”
The rooster crowed loudly. ‘Co-co-kekko’ in Japanese, ‘Co-co’ literally means here and ‘kekko’ means perfect.
That is, the rooster let the god know that “the soil here was perfect!”
As soon as the god heard it, the god sent his birds to the land.
Still today, when the roosters step on the ground, they crow “Co-co-kekko!”
It’s because they remember that time.
